2006-2007 Off-Season Programs
Camp Ho Mita Koda offered recreational and educational off-season programs in the fall of 2006 and winter/spring of 2007 to provide campers the opportunity to reunite with friends from camp, welcome those new to the Camp Ho Mita Koda community, and have some weekend fun! The programs were designed for all age groups. While ice skating has been a favorite annual event that can accommodate large groups, we also added some programs with limited enrollment especially for children with diabetes. These smaller programs offered more individualized programming for children and provided comfortable environments for parents to network. Below is a recap of Camp Ho Mita Koda's recent off-season programs.
- Fall Family Festival and Halloween Party
More than 120 people gathered at Camp Ho Mita Koda on October 28, 2006 for the Fall Family Festival and Halloween Party. The afternoon featured a magician, singing led by Counselor Duane, Flower Clown, and trick-or-treating in the dispensary. It was fun for the whole family! CLICK HERE to view photos from the event.
- Valentine's Day Afternoon Tea
Participants enjoyed afternoon tea at Clementine's in Rocky River on Sunday, February 11, 2007. Fine teas were brewed and delicate finger sandwiches and mini desserts were served! CLICK HERE to view photos from the event.
- Children's Cooking Class
Pat LeGrand, owner of "A Touch of Sugar Healthy Lifestyle Center" who was recently featured on the Food Network, was the instructor for this fun, hands-on cooking class designed especially for children with diabetes, held on March 10, 2007. Children prepared simple recipes, discussed healthy eating, and tasted the food they’ve prepared. Children also received a special Camp HMK apron. A separate program for parents was held while their children were busy in the kitchen. Parents received helpful “diabetes friendly” cooking tips, recipes and food samples. - Family Ice Skating
Campers and their families enjoyed an ice skating party on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at the Cleveland Heights Community Center Ice Rink.

- Sports Nutrition for Teens
On Sunday, April 1, 2007, Matt Sebastian, RD, LD (Nutrition Educator for the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland) offered a sports nutrition class and discussed nutrition strategies, common myths, and the do's and don't of sports nutrition. People with diabetes can have a successful sports career. Rower, Steven Redgrave and swimmer, Gary Hall Jr. are just two of the elite athletes with diabetes, who compete at the highest level of demanding sports. With good management, it is possible to participate in sports and extracurricular activities, even at an elite level.
- Verizon Wireless Swim for Diabetes
Camp Ho Mita Koda campers, families, staff, alumni, and friends participated in the Camp Swim Day of the Verizon Wireless SWIM for Diabetes at Broadview Heights Recreation Center Pool on Sunday, April 22, 2007. The $4,200 raised at this pool directly benefits Camp Ho Mita Koda. Special thanks to Bob and Kit Gibson, parents of camper Sam Gibson, for organizing this event.
