Laurel School Nurse Susan J. Kramer Honored for Her Service to Children with Diabetes

On Wednesday, May 12, the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland (DAGC) and Laurel School awarded the first annual Susan J. Kramer Award for Excellence in School Nursing to Laurel School nurse Susan J. Kramer. Established by Laurel School parents Karen Horowitz, M.D. and Jeffrey Kahn, the award is designed to thank school nurses in Northeast Ohio for their daily dedication to the children they serve and encourage them to follow Nurse Kramer’s example as an outstanding nurse educator and advocate for children. The honor will be given annually by DAGC and is accompanied by the Camp Ho Mita Koda School Nurse Campership Fund that encourages gifts in the honoree’s name and other school nurses to help fund scholarships for children with type 1 diabetes to attend the DAGC camp in Newbury Township.

Dr. Horowitz and Jeffrey Kahn said that Nurse Kramer has been an exceptional friend and partner to children with diabetes in our community. “Thanks to Susan’s influence, Laurel students are able to manage their diabetes at school and navigate the challenges that it brings with assurance,” said Dr. Horowitz, an associate professor of medicine at the Case School of Medicine and member of the board of directors of DAGC. “She helps build a foundation of self-confidence and self-esteem in each student which will serve her well. Her positive attitude, firm guidance and leadership help ensure that children with diabetes will dream, dare and do!”

“The award provides a platform for nurse honorees to share best practices with their colleagues at other schools and within their professional organizations,” said Nurse Kramer. She said she looks forward to sharing with others what she has learned at Laurel about helping children and youth to take charge and live well with their diabetes and build understanding and acceptance about diabetes and other chronic diseases.

True to form, Nurse Kramer set yet another example of her professionalism and caring as she provided a child-centered, tutorial about diabetes to the Laurel students who attended her awards ceremony. Upon completion of her presentation, she was honored by students with a heart pendant, thunderous applause and appropriately, a modern rendition of the song “Lean on Me” by the School Choir the Mean and Green.

From everyone associated with DAGC and Laurel School, and on behalf of all the past, current and future students you will serve, thank you for your service!
