Camp Nurse
Camp Ho Mita Koda is a residential camp for children ages 6-15 who have Type 1 diabetes. It is located on 75 wooded acres in Newbury, Ohio (Geauga County), just 25 miles east of Cleveland. Campers attend 5 age-grouped sessions. Staff receive one week (paid) of orientation and training.
Camp Nurse will assist with the daily management of summer camp dispensary operations. Camp Nurse will adhere to and enforce American Camping Association (ACA)standards and Camp medical policies and procedures. Nurses are required to live on site. Positions are available for the entire season or for individual sessions.
Required Qualifications:
- RN or LPN with current licensure in the state of Ohio.
- Prior nursing experience required; experience with children with diabetes preferred.
- First Aid and CPR certifications that remain current through August 2008.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Desire and ability to work with children with diabetes.
- Display a responsible, courteous and friendly manner at all times. Possess patience, enthusiasm, initiative, time-management skills, organizational skills, flexibility, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills including e-mail, MS Word and Excel.
- Valid Drivers License
Responsible to: Camp Nurse Manager. Will interface with Camp Health Manager, Attending and Resident Physicians, and Camp Dietician.
Responsibilities & Position Requirements:
- Health and Safety of campers and camp staff.
- Assist/carry out medical orders of physicians, including medication distribution.
- Perform first aid, CPR, and care in an emergency or in any other situation when found necessary.
- Assist with organization of Dispensary and inventory control.
- Become familiar with each camper and his/her chart.
- Provide nursing coverage in Camp Dispensary. Coverage will include some camper activity sites and overnight on-call rotation.
- Assist with all dispensary related written documentation and recordkeeping Including, but not limited to, requirements of the American Camp Association, Camp Medical Director, and the Diabetes Association Greater Cleveland.
- Communicate with parents on telephone and at check-outs about camper health.
- Required to participate in Staff Orientation week and Open House.
- Required to assist at all camp check-ins and check-outs with assigned roles and responsibilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Pay and Benefits:
- Weekly wage is commensurate with experience.
- Staff receives one paid week of orientation and training prior to start of first residence camp session.
- Positions are temporary, and do not include health insurance.
- Staff receives free meals and snacks (staff have same menu as campers) during residence camp sessions.
- On-site housing provided.
- Staff receives a four-day break from July 2-July 5.
- Camp Nurses receive break times each day, a minimum of one 24-hour period off between residential camp sessions, and one 24-hour period off during 12-day sessions.
