Camp Lifeguard/Counselor

Camp Ho Mita Koda is a residential camp for children ages 6-15 who have Type 1 diabetes. It is located on 75 wooded acres in Newbury, Ohio (Geauga County), just 25 miles east of Cleveland. Campers attend 5 age-grouped sessions. Staff are required to attend one week of paid orientation and training.

Camp Lifeguards work under the direction of the Waterfront Manager to provide waterfront programming facilitation and supervision. Lifeguards will sleep in camper cabins and share overnight camper supervision responsibilities with counselors.

Required Qualifications:

• High school graduate and at least 18 years of age.
• First Aid and CPR and American Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguard Training certifications that remain current through August 2008.
• Small Craft Safety certification (training will be provided during Staff Orientation & Training Week)
• Camp Lifeguards are required to live on site and be available for the entire length of camp.
• Desire and ability to work with children with diabetes.
• Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
• Ability to adapt to new situations and group living.
• Possess strength, patience, flexibility and endurance required to maintain consistent supervision of campers for 3-day, 5-day and 12-day resident camping experience.
• Display a responsible, courteous and friendly manner at all times and be willing to work as part of a team.
• Having diabetes is not a required prerequisite for working at Camp Ho Mita Koda. Staff training and orientation will be held prior to camp and will include diabetes education.

Responsible to: Waterfront Manager and Camp Director

Responsibilities & Position Requirements:

• Must verify skills in rescue and emergency procedures by demonstration/skills check during staff orientation.
• Serve as a Lifeguard at pool and lake during designated program activity times.
• Perform first aid, CPR, and rescue skills in an emergency and in any other situation when found necessary.
• Attend waterfront training and orientation with Waterfront Manager during staff orientation week.
• Under the direction of the Waterfront Manager, serve as an activity instructor during waterfront programming with campers at designated activity times. Programming will include, but is not limited to free swim, camper swim assessments, swim lessons, boating, fishing, and water games.
• Assist in care, preparation, and cleaning of waterfront equipment.
• Assist Waterfront Director with daily waterfront safety inspections.
• Set a good example for campers including demonstration of pool and lake rules, attitude, punctuality, diabetes control, table manners, sportsmanship, etc
• Camp Lifeguard/Counselors sleep in camper cabins and assist with overnight supervision of campers.
• Attend and participate in Staff Orientation week, Open House, special camp events and programs, and all daily camp activities such as flag raising and lowering, meals, assemblies and evening activities.
• Assist at all camp check-ins and check-outs with assigned roles and responsibilities.
• Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in the group
• Monitor camper behavior and prevent problems

• Other duties as assigned

Pay and Benefits:

• $200.00 base pay per week. Additional $20 per week for staff age 21 years and older. Pay adjustments for returning Camp Ho Mita Koda staff.
• Staff receives one paid week of orientation and training prior to start of first residence camp session.
• Positions are temporary, and do not include health insurance.
• Staff receives free meals and snacks (staff have same menu as campers) during residence camp sessions.
• Staff receives a four-day paid break from July 2-July 5.
• Lifeguard/Counselors receive break times each day, a minimum of one 24-hour period off between residential camp sessions, and one 24-hour period off during 12-day sessions.
