Junior Camp Counselor
Camp Ho Mita Koda is a residential camp for children ages 6-15 who have Type 1 diabetes. It is located on 75 wooded acres in Newbury, Ohio (Geauga County), just 25 miles east of Cleveland. Campers attend 5 age-grouped sessions. Staff receive one week (paid) of orientation and training.
Jr. Camp Counselors assist Camp Counselors to provide a safe, fun and quality camping experience for an assigned group of campers. Jr. Camp Counselors are required to live on site and be available for the entire length of camp.
Required Qualifications:
- At least 17 years of age

- Desire and ability to work with children with diabetes.
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
- Display a responsible, courteous and friendly manner at all times and be willing to work as part of a team.
- Ability to adapt to new situations and group living.
- Possess strength, patience, flexibility and endurance required to maintain consistent supervision of campers for 3-day, 5-day and 12-day resident camping experience.
- Having diabetes is not a required prerequisite for working at Camp Ho Mita Koda. Staff training and orientation will be held prior to camp and will include diabetes education.
Responsible to: Camp Director or as assigned.
Responsibilities & Position Requirements:
- To assist camp staff with providing general supervision of campers throughout all aspects of the camp program, including wake up, meals, activities, and bedtime. Jr. Camp Counselors sleep in camper cabins and assist with overnight supervision of campers.
- Assist Camp Counselors and other program instructors during scheduled activity times; Jr. Counselors may be asked to co-facilitate some camp activities.
- In collaboration with Camp Director and Camp Counselors, help with the planning and implementation of cabin time, evening activities and special events.
- Provide help with meal times by assisting with set-up and clean up.
- Must attend and participate in Staff Orientation week, Open House, special camp events and programs, and daily all-camp activities such as meals, assemblies and evening activities.
- Must assist at all camp check-ins and check-outs with assigned roles and responsibilities.
- Responsible for serving as a positive role model for campers, including attitude, punctuality, diabetes control, table manners, sportsmanship, etc.
- Monitor camper behavior and recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving.
- Work as a team with other camp staff to ensure that all campers needs are met in a fair and appropriate way.
- Other duties as assigned.
Pay and Benefits:
- $125.00 per week.
- Staff receives one paid week of orientation and training prior to start of first residence camp session.
- Positions are temporary, and do not include health insurance.
- Staff receives free meals and snacks (staff have same menu as campers) during residence camp sessions.
- Staff receives a paid four-day, paid break from July 2-July 5.
- Jr. Counselors receive break times each day, a minimum of one 24-hour period off between residential camp sessions, and one 24-hour period off during 12-day sessions.
