Dispensary Staff

Camp Ho Mita Koda is a residential camp for children ages 6-15 who have Type 1 diabetes. It is located on 75 wooded acres in Newbury, Ohio (Geauga County), just 25 miles east of Cleveland. Campers attend 5 age-grouped sessions. Staff are required to attend one week of paid orientation and training.

The Dispensary Staff member will work under the direction of the Camp Nurse Manager and Camp Medical Director to provide assistance with daily camp dispensary operations. He/she will adhere to and enforce American Camping Association (ACA)standards and Camp medical policies and procedures. The Dispensary staff member is required to live on site and be available for the entire length of camp. (Staff training begins on June 7). This is an excellent opportunity to learn about children and diabetes; The Dispensary staff member will learn the current management of type 1 diabetes, including blood glucose monitoring, insulin algorithms, management of insulin reactions and modifications of diet and exercise.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current BSN, RN, dietetic, pharmacy or medical student. LPN and graduate nurses are also eligible.
  • Previous clinical experience through an approved university or hospital program.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications that remain current through August 2008.
  • Basic computer skills including e-mail, MS Word and Excel.
  • Desire and ability to work with children with diabetes
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Display a responsible, courteous and friendly manner at all times. Possess patience, enthusiasm, initiative, time-management skills, organizational skills, flexibility, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to new situations and group living

Responsible to: Directly responsible to Camp Nurse Manager. Will interface with Camp Nurses, Resident Physicians, and Camp Director.

Responsibilities & Position Requirements:

  • Assist with blood glucose monitoring and recordkeeping.
  • Assist with camper file management and documentation.
  • Assist with inventory management and recordkeeping.
  • Assist with Dispensary set-up and organization.
  • Prepare camper packets for check-out.
  • Maintain supply of dispensary forms.
  • Required to participate in Staff Orientation week and Open House.
  • Required to assist at all camp check-ins and check-outs with assigned roles and responsibilities.
  • Assist with camper supervision during scheduled activities.
  • Provide assistance to Medical Staff during scheduled diabetes and nutrition education sessions for campers.
  • May require some overnights in camper cabins.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay and Benefits:

  • $225.00 base pay per week. Additional $20 per week for staff age 21 years and older.
  • Staff receives one paid week of orientation and training prior to start of first residence camp session.
  • Positions are temporary, and do not include health insurance.
  • Staff receives free meals and snacks (staff have same menu as campers) during residence camp sessions.
  • On-site housing provided.
  • Staff receives a four-day break from July 2-July 5.
  • Dispensary Staff receive break times each day, a minimum of one 24-hour period off between residential camp sessions, and one 24-hour period off during 12-day sessions.
