Camp Counselor

Camp Ho Mita Koda is a residential camp for children ages 6-15 who have Type 1 diabetes. It is located on 75 wooded acres in Newbury, Ohio (Geauga County), just 25 miles east of Cleveland. Campers attend 5 age-grouped sessions. Staff are required to attend one week of paid orientation and training.

Camp Counselors provide supervision of campers to ensure a safe, fun and quality camping experience. Each counselor is also responsible for planning and facilitating a minimum of one camp activity.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduate and at least 18 years of age.
  • Camp Counselors are required to live on site and be available for the entire length of camp.
  • Desire and ability to work with children with diabetes.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • Display a responsible, courteous and friendly manner at all times and be willing to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to adapt to new situations and group living.
  • Possess strength, patience, flexibility and endurance required to maintain consistent supervision of campers for 3-day, 5-day and 12-day resident camping experience.
  • Having diabetes is not a required prerequisite for working at Camp Ho Mita Koda. Staff training and orientation will be held prior to camp and will include diabetes education.

Responsibilities & Position Requirements:

  • Provide general supervision of campers throughout all aspects of the camp program. Supervision includes morning wake up, all meals, activities, and bedtime. Counselors sleep in camper cabins and provide overnight supervision of campers.
  • Design, coordinate and teach a minimum of one camp activity (i.e. crafts, yoga, archery, challenge course, etc). Programming will be based on camp need, camp activity schedule, and on the interest and credentials of the counselor.
  • Provide assistance during activity periods by ensuring that campers are at their scheduled activities, assist with attendance, assist with group management, provide assistance and support to the activity instructor, and communicate with medical team regarding signs and symptoms of high/low blood sugars.
  • Attend and participate in Staff Orientation week, Open House, special camp events and programs, and all daily camp activities such as flag raising and lowering, meals, assemblies and evening activities.
  • Assist at all camp check-ins and check-outs with assigned roles and responsibilities.
  • Responsible for serving as a positive role model for campers, including attitude, punctuality, diabetes control, table manners, treating others with respect, sportsmanship, etc.
  • Monitor camper behavior and recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving.
  • Work as a team with other camp staff to ensure that all campers needs are met in a fair and appropriate way.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay and Benefits:

  • $180.00 base pay per week. Additional $20 per week for staff age 21 years and older. Pay adjustments for returning Camp Ho Mita Koda staff.
  • Staff receives one paid week of orientation and training prior to start of first residence camp session.
  • Positions are temporary, and do not include health insurance.
  • Staff receives free meals and snacks (staff have same menu as campers) during residence camp sessions.
  • Staff receives a paid four-day break from July 2-July 5.
  • Counselors receive break times each day, a minimum of one 24-hour period off between residential camp sessions, and one 24-hour period off during 12-day sessions.
