Rich Humphreys' Walk for Camp Ho Mita Koda
Richard Humphreys likes to make things happen and he’s inviting you to help him. In September 2005, Rich will walk the 380 miles from Camp Ho Mita Koda, 30 miles east of Cleveland, to his home in Southeastern Pennsylvania. In doing so, he hopes to raise $100,000 for the camp, which he directs, for a much needed parking lot and new tennis courts. Pledges can be made by the mile - as little as a penny a mile will help - or given as a flat donation. All donations are tax deductible.
Rich was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 14 years old. While living with diabetes for 48 years, he has committed himself to encouraging others, especially children who are also faced with the challenges of living every day, every hour, with this chronic and often debilitating disease. He has helped to establish 2 camps for diabetic children in Pennsylvania and has served Camp Ho Mita Koda for 14 years.
These camps provide a haven of networking and relationship building within a traditional camp experience, as well as promoting the healthy and active lifestyle that Rich’s own life exemplifies. He has taught school in Alaska, traveled around the world, ending the adventure when he was 33 by riding his 10 speed bicycle from Oregon to Pennsylvania. Rich continues to backpack, ride a bicycle, and maintain his 15 acre property. Today, when he is not directing Camp Ho Mita Koda, Rich guides school groups - interacting with some 4,000 children a year - at his nature center in Pennsylvania. There he promotes stewardship of the environment and serves as a living example to children with and without diabetes "that life, like every other blessing, derives its value from its use alone" (Samuel Johnson).
Rich Humphreys hopes his walk in September will confirm two things for children with diabetes at Camp HoMita Koda - that exercise is essential, and that if you take care of yourself, challenging yourself both physically and psychologically to do your best, diabetes will not limit you in living and full and productive life.
Camp Ho Mita Koda has served children with diabetes since 1929, helping thousands of campers live healthier lives despite their challenging disease. While Rich’s walk is not an official fundraising event of the camp, the camp’s volunteer leadership supports his effort and applauds his commitment to children. Beginning on August 29, you can track Rich’s progress online at www.CampHoMitaKoda.com, where you can also make credit card pledges or donations online to support his walk. Check’s payable to the camp can be sent to “Rich’s Walk” c/o Camp Ho Mita Koda, 3601 S. Green Rd., #100, Cleveland, Ohio 44122. On behalf of the children and families of Camp Ho Mita Koda, thank you so much.
Anyone wishing to send a few words of encouragement to Rich during his walk can do so by sending them via email to camp@dagc.org.
