A successful week at Camp Ho Mita Koda has come to an end, but it was nice to see the familiar faces of campers and counselors, as well as faces of the new. It is always our goal to make camp a fun, yet informative experience for children with diabetes and hopefully the first session of summer 2008 has been a memorable experience for all of our campers!
Along with making new friends, campers got to participate in several fun activities that may not be available to them at home, such as: horseback riding, swimming, archery, boating, fishing, drama classes, ropes, and arts and crafts to name a few. But it isn’t only common known sports that Camp Ho Mita Koda offers. Campers got to be a part of ninja games, created by counselors, where they were taught stealth and agility, all while wearing a t-shirt ninja mask. The girls’ night activities consisted of new games like big sis, lil sis, where they played bonding games popular in the 70’s and 80’s. And all of that went on while the boys challenged the counselors in Gladiator games, which included sumo wrestling and jousting. Needless to say, there was never a dull moment!
We always like to recognize exceptional achievements at camp every year, so let us mention a few campers who excelled at their chosen activities. Congratulations to Andrew Butterworth for winning Iron Chef, a new competition included in the gardening and cooking activities. McKenzie Ramser and Susan Smith reached the top of the climbing wall, as well as Danny Bennett, who reached the top not only once but twice. Kendrick Oxford caught the first fish of the summer! Anthony Sabino got a bulls eye during archery and Matt Schubert received the top archery score of 30! Congratulations campers, you were exceptional this summer!
So, to wrap up, as the week sadly comes to an end, we would like to thank: the camp staff, our sponsors and alumni, our wonderful campers, and of course you, the parents for making Session One truly phenomenal. We hope to see you all again next year and wish you a safe and happy summer!
